George Craig Spence: Artist (1932-2017)

George Spence was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1932. He studied stained glass and glass engraving at the Glasgow School of Art. Following his national service in the post-war RAF, he crossed the Atlantic to take up a position as a graphic designer in Toronto, later moving to New York. His experience of the New York jazz scene renewed his interest in music. Upon his return to London in 1955, he became a professional musician. During the 1960s, he further developed his interest in art and commenced painting professionally in 1971, initially focusing on more abstract 3-dimensional works and cityscapes. Later, he became well-known for his florals and unusual landscapes with floral foregrounds. The latter have a most recognisable style offering an extensive depth of field from foreground flowers through to distant fields and hills beyond. During his career, he sold hundreds of paintings, both in watercolour and oils. Eight of his works were published in print form by one of the Country’s leading art publishers. He died in Lincolnshire in 2017.

Exhibitions of his work included:
Mansard Gallery (London), Lombard Gallery (Bromley), Seen Gallery (London), Stalfs (Toronto, Canada), Liberty’s (London), Spectrum (Dorking), and Harrods (London)
